Fathers' Day Friday

This morning we took the opportunity as a school to let dads, grandads and uncles know how much we appreciate them by putting on a bacon sandwich breakfast and an assembly in their honour - just because we reckon they're cool and they deserve it.  In class we also made vouchers for our dads that they can use sometime to get us to do stuff for them . . .  wash the car, weed the garden, cook them breakfast, clean their football boots, give them a massage, allow them to have a sleep in, etc.  Anyway, here's a few photos from the morning.  Enjoy!

Lunch Rubbish Flow Chart

Here's our flow chart showing the possible things that can happen to the rubbish we bring to school in our lunch box.  We realised that we need to RETHINK the way we do things so that we can care for our environment and keep New Zealand clean and green!  Just click on the picture to take a closer look.

We are Sustainable Coastlines

Visitors From Sustainable Coastlines

On Friday we had an awesome visit from the guys from Sustainable Coastlines.  Chris was really interesting to listen to and we all (including Mr Hayward) learnt lots about how important it is to do all we can to look after our beautiful islands and beaches.  Here's some pictures below that show some of the stuff he talked about and under that a few of us have written what we thought of the visit - or what we especially learnt.
And keep an eye on our blog over the next few weeks because hopefully we might be going to do some cleaning up of our own as a class in a water way near our school - now that would be cool!

When Chris talked to us I learnt that rubbish can harm all sorts of sea creatures. (E.M.)

I liked the visit from Chris from Sustainable Coastlines because I had no idea you could make such cool art with recycle stuff.  Chris was very interesting and stylish too!!! (A.H.)

I didn't like it when there was rubbish all over the beach because it makes it all yucky. (B.T.)

I learnt about how we are eating our rubbish because we are littering and about how dangerous rubbish is for sea creatures. (E.W.

Last Friday Chris from Sustainable Coastlines came and talked to us.  It was clear the drains have lots of rubbish inside that goes to the beach and kills fish and birds.  It is very sad.  I support Sustainable Coastlines 100% and maybe you should too! (M.R.)

I felt upset to hear about the pollution and how animals are dying.  I'm glad that Chris came in to talk about it.  I felt really sorry for a little turtle that got a piece of plastic from a cream bottle around its body and it grew with it stuck there. (E.C.)

Book Week Finale

This past week we have had some great activities to celebrate book week including a visit from a couple of special authors.  But yesterday we had an awesome finale with nearly all the children in the school coming dressed up as a character from a book.  Here's how we looked and J.D. won best costume for our class for her mad hatter outfit at the school assembly.

KEEP IT GREEN PEOPLE - do the right thing!!!!

Wearable Art Inquiry

This Term we have an exciting new Inquiry where we will be creating our very own Wearable Art for a fashion show (in week 8) made entirely out of recycled materials.  Room 16's theme for the night will be FUTURE FANTASTIC.  Last week we all made our Inquiry heading for the wall using things we found in the classroom and in the rubbish to decorate the letters.  Check it out below and keep visiting our blog to see what we're getting up to.
Oh yeah - and Mr Hayward will be looking for some mums to assist us leading up to the show because he reckons that fashion design and construction is not his area of expertise.

Fun With Maths

Yesterday in the middle block we headed to the hall with Room 17 and 19 for the Maths Roadshow.  We were all pretty excited to have a go at the different activities on offer and it certainly wasn't a disappointment.  Have a look at our photos and see us in action as we get hands on with Maths.  It was heaps of fun and we can't wait to do it all again next year!
